After Atticus killed the dog , Jem was reduced to a state of "numb confusion. Dubose was addicted to painkillers, and she wanted to wean herself off of them before she died. She was having Jem read to her so that she could have a distraction. Jem did not know any of this until later, but Atticus knew that he could explain it and Jem would understand. Dubose was an underdog. Scout says that she hates him. Atticus says it's high time they went home. Back at home, Scout runs to her room to be alone.

Atticus muses that Scout needs to learn to keep her temper under control because in the next few months, there is going to be a lot in store for the family. Dubose dies a little more than a month after Jem's punishment ends. Atticus reveals to Jem that she was addicted to morphine and that the reading was part of her successful effort to combat this addiction.

Atticus gives Jem a box that Mrs. Dubose had given her maid for Jem ; in it lies a single white camellia. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout and Jem have respect for their father ; however, they describe him as different than most fathers during this time.

Scout and Jem both call Atticus by his first name. They do not affectionately refer to him as dad. Scout mentions that her father is courteous but sometimes distant. He believes everyone has a right to a fair trial and a competent defense.

Atticus does not believe this should only apply to the white race. This is not to say that Atticus believes he has much hope in swaying the town or jury of Tom's innocence. Tom realizes that although he believes in equality in law, most do not. Alexandra's grandson , Francis, begins teasing Scout about Atticus defending a black man. She attacks Francis and is punished by Uncle Jack , who had warned her not to fight or curse. Christmas evening, she and Uncle Jack talk, and she explains to him where he went wrong in his discipline.

First, she learned that, in general, Atticus trusts her to try and do the right thing. Second, she learned that her biggest problem is being hotheaded. Atticus accepted Tom Robinson's case because he knew no one else would want to take the case , and if anyone else did , he wouldn't put on a good case or care whether Tom was convicted. Atticus knew the odds of getting Tom off from the very beginning, but he knew that he had to try.
