Where is table top mountain located
It took us 6. It got quite muddy at the top but that was only an issue for the human! It took time to cover the 10 miles but it was a really fun hike! Beautiful trail along the Van Hoevenberg Trail, which takes you from the Loj to the junction to Tabletop.
The last mile ish is not maintained and follows a creek bed of sorts. Very muddy and difficult in spots. Needed to do this trail for the high peaks, will not do again. Wet trail, boot sucking mud on top. Beautiful views of Marcy, the MacIntyre Range, etc.
Trail was a little muddy but nothing too bad. Sky was very hazy but there was still a fairly good view from the top. Very nice day to do Table Top took about 6 hours to complete. Very wet though but trail less portions very easy to navigate. Trail to Tabletop not marked and had to make sure we were on the trail but overall a good time! Took us 6. The herd path was easier to follow than I expected. In places it's actually more like a trench. The only question we had about the trail was before the herd path as you cross Phelps Brook.
I mention it because on the way down we took a break at the brook and everyone except the ranger started down that path. It being Memorial Day weekend that meant a lot of people making that same mistake hence the beaten down path. The spur trail seemed longer than the. Cool at the top and no bugs and much nicer views on the approach and at the top than I expected. Great day. Slightly muddy once you turn up the herd path, but nothing serious. Very nice view of Marcy from the summit.
This is actually one of my favorite hikes in the high peaks that I have done so far. The first The views from the top are not , but give a really great perspective on Gothics, Colden, Marcy, Haystack, and Algonquin. It's a great bang for the mile buck. FYI trail conditions were perfect, no ice, and just a little hard-packed snow along the top. Nice hike, I was surprised by the change in weather -sun-rain-snow-hail I did get off trail some but found the creek again and walk right up it to the top.
This was a great hike. Not too difficult, but definitely not easy. Our 6 year old Golden Retriever handled it like a pro. A little muddy in spots. Once you cross back over the Phelps Brook after Phelps you start to run into some snow and ice. Spikes might be useful for these parts, but not necessary. Once we started up Tabletop we ran into lots of mud at first and then a lot of snow and ice.
We made it to the top without our spikes on, but would have been easier to use them. Spikes is an absolute must on your way down. In and out in about 7 hours including a nice long lunch break at the Dam on the way down. Casual approach hike in micro spikes and intense ascension the last mile. Finally, the views were so much better than expected. Trail was hard ice from the Loj to the summit.
Warm temps softened short stretches for the return, but overall the trail is in good shape. Was a fun trip! Postholes are covered by a faint dusting of snow Butt sledding was great near the mid top. Water crossings were frozen over pretty well. Gorgeous blue bird sky day. Perfect winter temps. Couldn't ask for a better winter hike. The snow is well packed and on Sunday there were a lot of hikers and skiers.
Beautiful blue skies and nice views. Snowshoes are mandated but the snow was well packed. High of 18 degrees. Snowshoes needed the whole time. Perfect conditions. Great first winter high peak in the books, easier than expected. Well broken out. So different in the winter as views above the trees are blocked in summer. So much snow in the woods gotta be pushing six feet. Tabletop Mountain. Adirondak Loj Rd, Lake Placid. Tabletop Mountain trail map.
Hike Features Summit. Look for the leaves to fall for the best Tabletop views. Here is the big one, Mount Marcy, seen from Tabletop. Always bring water for everyone. The trail was nowhere to be found. Found some abandoned buildings on a separate trail. That was cool but very disappointed to not find a way to the top. Maybe next time. Hiked to the top on March 15, Only passed one other person. Beautiful flowers and impressive views. The last 1. Great place to self-isolate!
Great trail. Drove to trail on a Utv and took one hour. Plan for at least 1. When you get there there is a restroom house and lunch spot. There is two spots you can go on top. First is a wooden pole then you can head on to the other side which gives you better views of the other side.
Took total of 7 hrs up and down. We were going pretty fast too. Pack a lot of water and lunch. The mysterious wall at top was awesome too. I went with a couple of friends of mine and our older boys 12 yrs old and up this past weekend. The trail is very scenic. It was difficult to get to the trail head. It took 40 minutes from I-8 to get there. We did need to use our 4x4 vehicle to get through some of the washes.
However, it was well worth the drive. Vegetation and animal life are very plentiful; signs of mule deer, mountain goats, javelina, jackrabbits, and coyotes are everywhere. We even saw a desert tortoise as we were hiking up the mountain.
Lots of cacti along the trail. The path goes through a forest of jumping cactus. Hiking boats and plyers are a must. Of course carry LOTS of water with you. The trail is very remote. There were no signs of illegals. We were by ourselves the entire trip- we saw no people. The trail was pristine. The views were fantastic. The hike felt like 10 miles not 7.
If you can hike Picacho Peak to the top, you can hike table top. Good trail but saw signs of ppl crossing the boarder. Make sure you are armed. Allow at least an hour from the highway to the parking area.
The trail was very enjoyable and provided great views with a variety of surfaces to negotiate. As others have mentioned, leave early and bring plenty of water. Hiked first mile a couple days ago. Was just out exploring when I came up on the trailhead. Within the first hundred yards I spooked up a large deer. Saw lots of sign of deer, snake and badger. We took an Uber there from Simon's Town after we'd gone whale watching. It dropped us off at the bottom of the Table Top Mountain cable car, where you also find the ticket office, a shop, and restrooms.
We'd gotten complimentary tickets from the Cape Town tourism board and so we headed straight for the line to get into the elevator. The elevator takes you up to the platform from where the table mountain aerial cableway takes off, but you can also simply take the stairs up. Once we got inside the table mountain gondola, we got lucky to get a spot by the window.
We soon found out. The cable car started turning! That way, everybody gets a good view of Cape Town from above. That is, until you go through the famous Table Mountain cloth. It can be clouded on top of Table Mountain even on the sunniest day and even when it's not, the weather circumstances can change so fast that it's hard to plan your visit.
We were bummed a bit that it was clouded when we got up there, but we visited when it best fitted our program and didn't want to risk putting it off until the end of our stay without a guarantee of clear skies. Yes, there are trails leading up and down, but even if you visit Table Mountain with the cable car, there are several options for a bit of walking around at the top. In fact, there are three loop routes that all follow the same path, but of which the two shorter ones simply cut through the middle of the loop a bit sooner.
The Klipspringer one is the longest one, followed by the Agama Walk and the Dassie walk. We took the longest route and made a little detour getting on one of the trails that head down the mountain as well.
It took us a little over an hour over mostly flat terrain, making plenty of stops to admire the Table Mountain flora and fauna along the way. Vegetation up on table mountain consists mostly out of different kinds of fynbos, with their being over 2, kinds of plants and flowers on the mountain.
Some animals found on Table Mountain are porcupines, lizards, snakes, and tortoises. The only animal we saw aside from a few birds , though, was the dassie , or the rock hyrax. In fact, we saw quite a few of these guinea-pig-like animals on our walk and because of their similarity to several rodents, I was surprised to learn later that they actually have more in common with elephants than with, for example, the guinea-pigs they look a little alike!
It was clear that the dassies at Table Mountain were used to seeing humans as they weren't shy at all.
Some even came up to us, a bit hesitant but clearly hoping for a snack. During our Table Mountain hike, we came across several information plates telling us all about the place and its geology. That was enough for us, but if you want to know more or have specific questions, you can always join one of the free Table Mountain guided walks that take place daily between 9 a.
